Old town & heritage
A city on seven hills
Bamberg’s old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. It has survived the centuries almost untouched: lanes, bridges and churches just as they have grown since the Middle Ages. Bamberg is also known as the “Franconian Rome”.
- Old Town Hall
- Built on its own island in the middle of the Regnitz, with painted façades and a little half-timbered house that seems to float above the river.
- Imperial Cathedral
- Four towers above the city; inside, the Bamberg Horseman and the tomb of Emperor Henry II and Cunigunde.
- New Residence & Rose Garden
- Right opposite the cathedral. In summer thousands of roses bloom in the Rose Garden, with the finest view over the rooftops.
- Little Venice
- The old fishermen’s houses right on the water. Best seen from the opposite bank or on a boat trip on the Regnitz.
- Altenburg
- The castle on the highest of the seven hills. The climb is worth it for the wide view over Bamberg and the countryside.
Our tipLeave the car behind. The bus stops outside the house and gets you to the centre in 15 minutes – the old town is best explored on foot.
Beer & food
Smoked beer, beer cellars and Franconian food
Bamberg is a true beer city: around a dozen breweries in the city alone, plus many small family breweries in the surrounding area. It’s famous for Rauchbier, smoked beer made from malt kilned over beechwood fires. Try it at one of the old town’s two traditional smoked-beer breweries, Schlenkerla and Spezial.
In summer, Franconians go “auf den Keller” – to the beer cellar: you sit in a beer garden under old chestnut trees with a fresh Kellerbier and a hearty snack.

- Schäuferla (roast pork shoulder) with dumplings, the stuffed Bamberg onion and, to finish, a Seidla of smoked beer.

Cycling & nature
Along the water
Around Bamberg the Regnitz, Main and Aurach meet. The cycle paths are correspondingly flat and well developed – great for families and leisurely riders too.

Almost no climbs, heading south along the river and the Main-Danube Canal – ideal for a day tour.

One of Germany’s best-known long-distance cycle routes passes Bamberg. Perfect for a stage upstream or downstream.

For little explorers
- Hain park
- The large city park on the Regnitz with a playground, boat hire and a river bathing spot for hot days.
- Bambados
- Bamberg’s indoor and outdoor pool, for when the weather doesn’t play along or the kids just want to get in the water.
- Steigerwald treetop walk
- A path through the treetops up to a lookout tower. Easy to manage with a pushchair, too.
- Hundshaupten wildlife park
- In Franconian Switzerland: bison, lynx and red deer in extensive woodland.
- Storks next door
- A pair of storks nests opposite M6 every year. From the balcony of The Cube you can watch the nest.

Sandkerwa
Bamberg’s biggest folk festival around the Sandstraße. Five days of music, beer and the fishermen’s jousting on the Regnitz.

In the heart of the old town on Maxplatz, with lights, crafts and mulled wine.

Bamberg Nativity Trail
Around 35 nativity scenes in churches, museums and special places around the city, from traditional to modern.
- Summer
Village fairs (Kerwa)
Almost every village celebrates its own church fair: beer under the trees, brass bands and Franconian food. True Franconian moments.
Stegaurach itself
Arriving in the village centre
Stegaurach borders directly on the west of Bamberg and has kept its village character. Much of it is within walking distance of M6.
