Bamberg’s old town has survived the centuries almost untouched and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Add a beer culture you’ll only find in Franconia and a countryside that is made for day trips.

- The Old Town Hall in the river Regnitz, the Imperial Cathedral, Little Venice and the New Residence are all close together. Best explored on foot.

- Around a dozen breweries in town, the famous smoked beer and, in summer, beer cellars under old chestnut trees.

- Schäuferla (roast pork shoulder) with dumplings, the Bamberg onion and a snack at the beer cellar. Hearty and good.

Where to stay

At M6 you don’t stay in the old town but in the village centre of Stegaurach, right on the western edge of Bamberg. That means more space, your own kitchen and parking at the house. And you’re still in the heart of town in approx. 15 minutes by bus.

Beer gardens under chestnut trees, boating in the Hain park and, at the end of August, the Sandkerwa festival with fisherman’s jousting on the Regnitz.

Autumn colours in the Steigerwald, clear days for cycling and hiking and cosy evenings in the brewery taverns.
Winter
The Christmas market on Maxplatz and the Bamberg nativity trail from late November to 6 January.

Where is the best place to stay for a holiday in Bamberg?
It depends on what matters to you. In the old town you’re right in the middle of things, but usually in a hotel room without your own parking. At M6 in Stegaurach you get a whole holiday house with a kitchen and parking at the door, and you’re still in the old town in approx. 15 minutes by bus.
How many days should I plan for Bamberg?
Two to three days are enough for the old town with the cathedral, the Old Town Hall and Little Venice. If you also want to see Franconian Switzerland, the Steigerwald or Nuremberg, a week is ideal.
Do I need a car in Bamberg?
Not for the city. The bus stops right outside the house and takes approx. 15 minutes to the old town. For trips into the region a car is handy, and every home has two private parking spaces.
Can I bring my dog on holiday in Bamberg?
Yes. On request up to two pets are welcome; the fee is €15 per pet per night. Dog liability insurance is required.
Is Bamberg good for a family holiday?
Very. The Hain park with playground and boat hire, the treetop walk in the Steigerwald and the Hundshaupten wildlife park are just a few ideas. At Anno 1802 there is also a gallery with a play corner and a garden.
